Traffic Operation and Monitoring Cameras

The City of Thornton uses cameras to help manage traffic signals and improve traffic flow. These cameras provide real-time information to traffic engineers so they can respond efficiently to congestion, incidents, or maintenance needs. These cameras are owned and operated by the City of Thornton.

Vehicle Detection Cameras

  • These cameras detect the presence of vehicles at traffic signals.

  • Data from these cameras helps manage traffic signals, reduce congestion, and improve travel times.

  • Vehicle detection cameras do not record images, they only detect vehicle movement and, in some cases, count vehicles moving through a traffic signal.

CCTV Traffic Monitoring Cameras

  • Closed-circuit (CCTV) cameras are used to observe traffic conditions in real time.

  • Infrastructure staff use these cameras to monitor congestion and other roadway incidents.
