The Thornton Police Department has arrested 28-year-old Lane Moreau in connection with bomb threats called in to City of Thornton facilities on July 21. 

The first call came into the Thornton City Pool, 2141 E. 95th Ave., just before 2 p.m. Six minutes later, a second call came into the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center, 11151 Colorado Blvd. In both cases, the suspect said he was making a bomb threat. 

Officers were dispatched to both locations and helped city staff evacuate patrons as well as set up reunification points. Thornton Police requested mutual aid. Explosives detection K9s from RTD Transit Police, Commerce City Police, Adams County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service responded to assist with the searches. No suspicious items were found, and both scenes were cleared by 5 p.m. Both facilities were closed for the remainder of the day and will resume normal operations Wednesday, July 22. 

Detectives quickly identified Moreau as a suspect. Investigators arrived at his residence by 2:30 p.m. and detained him for questioning. He was taken into custody by 6 p.m., just four hours after the first call came in. 

Moreau was arrested on two counts of false reporting of explosives and booked into the Adams County Jail.

At this time, investigators do not have any information indicating this incident is connected to the bomb threat received by Water World on July 11. However, detectives are in communication with the Federal Heights Police Department and are looking into the possibility. 

"Today's successful outcome reflects the outstanding teamwork between our city staff, dispatchers, patrol officers, detectives, and our law enforcement partners," said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. "Everyone responded with professionalism and urgency, and I'm grateful their coordinated efforts brought this incident to a safe and swift resolution.”

The Thornton Police Department has arrested 18-year-old Cesar Licon Jr. in connection with the homicide that occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m. on July 5 in the 3600 block of East 91st Avenue. 

Officers were dispatched to the area after receiving a report that a person had been shot and the suspect had fled the scene. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The 44-year-old victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died. 

Following the initial investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Licon. With assistance from the Commerce City Police Department, Licon was taken into custody on the evening of July 5. He was arrested for murder and booked into the Adams County Jail.

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred at 8:20 p.m. on June 7 in the 200 block of East 120th Avenue. 

Officers were dispatched to the area after a caller reported being shot in the leg. Minutes later, a witness also reported a nearby shooting to dispatch. 

Upon arrival, officers located a 40-year-old man near his vehicle in a parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers immediately began rendering aid until medical personnel arrived. 

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where it was determined that he sustained serious bodily injury. 

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting and to identify the suspect. The suspect vehicle is described as a black sedan, and the suspect is described as a Hispanic male.

The Thornton Police Department has identified the suspect in a triple homicide that occurred on the evening of May 22 in the 13900 block of Harrison Street.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. after a family member reported concern that multiple individuals inside the residence were unresponsive.

Upon arrival, officers entered the home and located four deceased individuals with apparent gunshot wounds: two adult males, one adult female, and one juvenile male.

Based on the initial investigation, detectives believe one of the adult males, a 33-year-old, fatally shot the three other family members before dying by suicide.

Suspect and victim identities are being withheld pending positive identification by the Adams County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin. The investigation remains active, and the information released reflects what is currently known.

The Thornton Police Department has concluded a homicide investigation that began in the early morning hours of March 15, 2026, at a residence in the 13200 block of Downing Street. 

Officers responded after 42-year-old Chad Gililland reported that his wife, 43-year-old Cheyenne Gililland, was unresponsive. Upon arrival, officers located Cheyenne lying on the floor inside the residence with no visible signs of fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene, and detectives immediately launched an investigation. 

Determining the manner of death required extensive forensic testing by the Adams County Coroner’s Office, along with additional analysis of evidence and investigative follow-up. On May 20, the coroner determined the manner of death to be homicide and listed the cause of death as closed head injuries due to blunt force impacts to the head due to a physical assault. 

Through the course of the investigation, Thornton Police detectives, in partnership with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, established probable cause to believe that Chad was responsible for the death of his wife. 

On March 23, eight days after Cheyenne’s death, dispatchers received a report of a shooting at the Gililland residence. A caller reported that an adult male had shot himself. Officers arrived on scene and confirmed that Chad had died by suicide. 

Due to Chad’s death, the investigation is considered closed. 

“No family should have to experience a loss like this,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “Our thoughts remain with Cheyenne's loved ones and everyone affected by this tragedy. We hope that sharing information about this case brings attention to the seriousness of domestic violence and reminds anyone struggling that they are not alone and support is available.”

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred just after 3 a.m. on May 10 in the 9700 block of Ogden Court. 

Officers were dispatched to the area after a caller reported that someone was attempting to break into their vehicle and that shots had been fired. Upon arrival, officers located a crashed truck.  

A 34-year-old male was found near the crashed truck suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the individual seen breaking into vehicles attempted to leave the area in the truck following the shooting, at which point he struck multiple parked vehicles before coming to a stop. Officers began rendering aid until medical personnel arrived. 

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His identity is being withheld pending positive identification by the Adams County Coroner's Office and notification of next of kin. 

The homicide suspect, a 23-year-old male, was quickly identified on scene and taken into custody in connection with the incident. He was arrested and later released pending charges and further investigation. Investigators do not believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

The City of Thornton recently received a complaint regarding a police officer’s use of the Flock Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system. The complaint was submitted by a representative of a group calling itself “Thornton for All.” It alleged misuse of the system by a specific Thornton Police Officer. The primary focus of the complaint was the volume of searches conducted. 

I directed an investigation, as I would for any formal complaint. This particular complaint received significant public attention across social media as well as some local news outlets. For this reason, I am sharing our findings with the community to provide clarity and context. 

The data provided with the complaint was reviewed but dismissed for purposes of this audit due to unreliability. When evaluating this third-party website data, it was clear the issues articulated in the website’s disclaimer were significant. Instead, our audit focused on internal system records of actual usage by this officer. 

The actual data revealed this officer performed 10,318 searches in the system during this timeframe, not the 19,194 searches alleged in the complaint. Our review confirmed the officer’s access to the system was consistent with the governing TPD ALPR policy at the time. His system use was supported by legitimate law enforcement and public safety objectives. There was no evidence to support any allegation of misuse. 

It was determined during our investigation that this officer routinely reviews the state’s Auto Theft Intelligence Coordination Center (ATICC) list of active stolen vehicles. His practice is to identify and prioritize vehicles on this list associated with violent crime. He then utilizes the department’s ALPR system to determine whether these vehicles have recently been captured by local ALPR cameras. If so, he shares relevant details with other officers in attempt to locate the vehicle and prevent further crime. 

This officer’s dedication to public safety objectives, as well as his tenacity in locating vehicles associated with victimizing members of our Thornton community, is clearly evident. 

When unverified and inaccurate information circulates, this can negatively shape public perception and damage valuable community trust. I am sharing these findings to provide necessary detail and context, as well as to ensure ongoing public discussion is grounded in fact. 

I am committed to ensuring law enforcement technology is used responsibly in accordance with department policy. This includes maintaining clear oversight and providing transparency in how we use these essential tools. The Thornton Police Department’s mission will always be grounded in public safety. The Thornton Police Department has arrested 35-year-old Joshua Pittman in connection with the homicide that was reported on April 24 in the 1900 block of West 101st Avenue. Pittman and the victim were known to each other. 

Officers initially responded to the location to check the well-being of a female. Upon entering the residence and conducting an extensive search of the home, they located a 66-year-old woman deceased. Detectives initiated a homicide investigation and subsequently identified Pittman as a person of interest. As the investigation progressed and additional evidence was gathered, Pittman was confirmed as the suspect.  

Pittman was taken into custody on April 27 after turning himself in to the Northglenn Police Department. He was arrested on several charges including murder, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. He was transported to the Adams County Jail.

The Thornton Police Department has identified a person of interest in connection with the homicide reported on April 24.

Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in locating 35-year-old Joshua Pittman. Investigators believe Pittman and the victim were known to each other, and that this does not appear to be a random act.

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred sometime between April 22 at approximately 9:00 p.m. and April 24 at approximately 10:30 a.m. in the 1900 block of West 101st Avenue.

On April 24 at approximately 10:30 a.m. officers responded to the location to check the wellbeing of a female who had not been seen or heard from in the last couple of days. When officers entered the residence they located a deceased adult female. Her death is being investigated as a homicide. No one else was located inside the home.

Detectives are currently conducting interviews and following investigative leads to develop more information.

Because this is an ongoing investigation, details may change in the future. The female's identity is being withheld pending positive identification by the Adams County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin.

The Thornton Police Department has arrested 25-year-old Zamien Rivas in connection with the homicide that occurred just before 11 p.m. on March 25 near East 88th Avenue and Grant Street. Rivas and the victim were known to each other.

Officers initially responded to a report of a person bleeding and located an adult male with an apparent wound. Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived. The 29-year-old victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died. Investigators have since learned the victim’s injuries were the result of a stabbing.

Rivas was taken into custody on April 2 with assistance from the Arvada Police Department. He was arrested for murder and booked into the Adams County Jail.

The Thornton Police Department is proud to introduce its newest team member, Donut, a specially trained therapy K-9 serving alongside the department’s co-responder unit to support mental health and crisis response calls. 

“Donut is another reflection of our commitment to innovative and compassionate policing,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “By integrating a therapy K-9 into our co-responder program, Thornton continues to prioritize advanced support to our community during mental health crises.” 

Donut comes to Thornton PD from the ConnorsK9–P.A.W.S. Law Enforcement Mental Health Response Therapy Dog Program. The black Labrador puppy is currently in training and, once placed, will become one of only a handful of law enforcement mental health response dogs in Colorado. 

His training is specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of the Thornton community. Through advanced socialization, therapy certification preparation, and scenario-based training with responders, Donut is being developed to maximize his impact as a calming presence for both officers and community members during difficult situations. 

The Thornton Police Department’s co-responder program, launched in October 2023, identified early on the benefits of incorporating a therapy dog into crisis response efforts. Officer Antillon and Clinician Pronio were selected as Donut’s handlers and will guide him through onboarding and deployment.

An 81-year-old man, identified as David Chambers, has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a child. David is the husband of a licensed home daycare provider and had previously assisted with daycare operations. 

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has formally charged Chambers with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse. 

The reported incidents are alleged to have occurred throughout 2025 while Chambers was providing daycare services from his residence in the 4200 block of East 114th Avenue. The daycare, known as Vickey’s Daycare, had been in business for more than 40 years, including at two previous locations in Thornton before moving to East 114th Avenue. It is now closed.

Chambers was booked into the Adams County Jail following his arrest and has since been released on bond. The Thornton Police Department has arrested 39-year-old Ismael Barajas Aguilar in connection with a shooting that occurred on Feb. 5.  

The investigation began after an adult woman arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound around 1:30 p.m. that day. Further investigation determined the shooting had taken place inside an apartment near the 9700 block of Pearl Street.  

Investigators later obtained an arrest warrant for Barajas Aguilar. On Feb. 11 around 4:40 p.m. the suspect was located near West 84th Avenue and Huron Street. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop as the suspect approached Gale Boulevard. 

The suspect failed to yield, leading to a brief vehicle pursuit. Officers executed a successful precision immobilization technique (PIT) at the southbound I-25 on-ramp at Thornton Parkway. Barajas Aguilar then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. Eastbound Thornton Parkway was temporarily closed following the incident.  

The suspect was transported to Adams County jail, where he is being held on the following charges:  

• Criminal Attempt – 2nd Degree Murder (F3) 

• 2nd Degree Assault – Reckless (F4) 

• Domestic Violence 

• Vehicular Eluding (F4)  

• Obstructing a Peace Officer  

• Resisting Arrest

27-year-old Wesley Norton has been arrested in connection with an incident that occurred on Feb. 3 just after 2 a.m. near West 88th Avenue and Huron Street. 

Thornton Police officers contacted an occupied suspicious vehicle parked at a gas station that did not have license plates. When the suspect provided false identification and was asked to exit the vehicle, he instead started the car and ignored officers’ commands to stop. 

As he drove away, two police officers were dragged several yards. One officer suffered minor injuries, while the other sustained significant injuries and is believed to have been run over by the vehicle and bitten by the suspect. 

Thorough investigative work led to the identification of the suspect, who was apprehended on Feb. 5. 

“This incident underscores the unpredictable and dangerous situations our officers face every day,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “Their actions, from the initial encounter through the investigation that followed, reflect their professionalism and resilience in serving this community.” 

The case was presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. After review, the District Attorney’s Office filed the following charges against Norton: 

• Count 1: Assault in the second degree (F4) 

• Count 2: Assault in the third degree  

• Count 3: Assault in the third degree  

• Count 4: Obstructing a peace officer 

• Count 5: False reporting of identifying information to law enforcement 

• Count 6: Reckless driving

The Thornton Police Department has arrested 23-year-old Jeremy Nobles in connection with the fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred on Feb. 7 near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Huron Street. 

During the investigation, officers developed a strong lead using Flock license plate reader (LPR) technology. Information obtained through LPRs enabled investigators to partner with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to issue a Medina Alert for the suspect vehicle. 

After the alert was issued, investigators made contact with the suspect by phone. The suspect provided the vehicle’s location in Northglenn and was later taken into custody. The vehicle identified through LPR technology was confirmed to be the vehicle involved in the crash. The Medina Alert was cancelled around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 8. 

Nobles was arrested on charges of careless driving causing serious bodily injury or death and failure to remain at the scene of a crash involving death. He was transported to the Adams County Jail.

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 7 near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Huron Street. 

Preliminary investigation indicates a 14-year-old boy riding a small motorized bike was traveling northbound on Huron Street when a suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck the bike from behind. The suspect vehicle continued northbound and did not stop. 

The boy was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Huron Street was closed for several hours while officers conducted the on-scene investigation. 

Investigators are asking anyone with information to help locate the vehicle and driver involved in this crash. The vehicle is believed to be a black BMW sedan with Colorado license plate FBWX60. Thornton Police have partnered with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to issue a Medina Alert for this vehicle. 

"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion." 

License plate reader (LPR) technology played a key role in the investigation, helping officers identify the suspect vehicle and providing the information necessary to issue the alert.

On Jan. 14, Thornton Police Officers arrested three suspects after a burglary in the 9600 block of Huron Street led to a shooting that resulted in one death. The case was presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. After review, the District Attorney’s Office filed the following charges against the individuals listed below:

The Thornton Police Department has arrested a 41-year-old man, Kody Jones, in connection with a shooting that occurred just after 6 p.m. on Jan. 25 in the 1400 block of East 98th Avenue. Officers responded to the area after receiving reports of shots heard and a request for medical assistance. Upon arrival, officers observed evidence indicating a residence had been struck by gunfire. One adult victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Around 6:15 p.m., the suspect contacted law enforcement and reported that he had shot someone. Officers located and took the suspect into custody without incident. The Thornton Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 in the 9600 block of Huron Street.

Officers responded after a caller reported hearing gunshots and provided a description of a suspect vehicle. As officers arrived, they observed the vehicle leaving the area and initiated a pursuit. The pursuit ended near West 56th Avenue and Federal Boulevard when officers successfully deployed a precision immobilization technique (PIT) to stop the vehicle.

At the original scene, officers located a 35-year-old male who had been struck by gunfire. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect vehicle contained four occupants, including an adult male who was found deceased from gunshot wounds. His identity is being withheld pending positive identification by the Adams County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin. The remaining three occupants, including one who attempted to flee on foot, were taken into custody.

Preliminary investigation indicates the suspects attempted to force entry into a residence, resulting in a confrontation with the occupants during which shots were fired. No Thornton Police officers discharged their weapons during the incident.

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on Dec. 23 around 2 a.m. on East 120th Avenue, just east of Holly Street. 

The preliminary investigation indicates a 47-year-old male was traveling eastbound when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. 

The rider was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, and investigators believe speed was a contributing factor.

Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 10:09 p.m. on Dec. 12 in the 7600 block of East 160th Avenue.

The preliminary investigation indicates a 39-year-old man was driving eastbound when he struck a 36-year-old female pedestrian who was in the roadway. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured and remained on scene, cooperating with investigators. No arrests have been made, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under Investigation.

The Thornton Police Department has arrested 47-year-old Michael Digiacomo, a former paraprofessional with Mapleton Public Schools. The arrest is the result of a thorough investigation by Thornton Police detectives, which led the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to file the following charges against him: 

• ENTICEMENT OF A CHILD, C.R.S. 18-3-305(1) (F4) 

• INTERNET LURING OF A CHILD, C.R.S. 18-3-306 (F5) 

The reported incidents occurred between March 13 and April 3 of 2025. Digiacomo was working as a paraprofessional at Welby Community School, and he was placed on administrative leave on April 3 through the end of the school year. His employment with the district was terminated on May 29. 

The initial investigation indicates that Digiacomo may have been previously employed by other metro-area school districts in Colorado. Detectives are investigating the possibility of additional victims and encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward. 

Digiacomo was booked into the Adams County Jail upon his arrest. He has posted bond pending upcoming court proceedings. The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual committed an offense under Colorado laws. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. 

“We take any allegation involving the safety of our youth very seriously,” said Police Chief Jim Baird. “We will continue to work closely with our partners at Mapleton Public Schools and the DA’s Office to make sure the community is informed and supported as this case moves forward.”

Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 23 near the intersection of West 88th Avenue and Lipan Street. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 39-year-old male riding an electric scooter was traveling westbound on West 88th Avenue when a 22-year-old male driving a Dodge Caravan was traveling eastbound and attempting to turn north onto Lipan Street, colliding with the scooter. 

The man riding the scooter was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances of the crash. The driver of the Dodge was uninjured and remained on scene.

The Thornton Police Department sends its condolences to everyone affected and encourages drivers to slow down and stay focused to help prevent future tragedies. 

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a stabbing that occurred just after 3 p.m. on October 23 near the 9100 block of Monroe Street, outside Meadow Community School. 

Officers responded after receiving reports that an adult male teacher had been stabbed. Upon arrival, officers quickly located and arrested the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Damien Brooks. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and there is no ongoing threat to the community. 

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident. At this time, it appears the attack was unprovoked, and there is no known relationship between the victim and the suspect. 

Victim advocates responded to assist students and staff who witnessed the incident. Thornton Police are working closely with Mapleton Public Schools to ensure support is available to students, parents and staff in the days ahead. 

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. The information provided is based on what is currently known and may change as the case develops.

The Thornton Police Department is set to launch its new automated traffic safety program to change driver behavior, curb reckless speeding, and make Thornton streets safer for all. Red-light cameras will be installed in all directions at the following intersections:   

• East 88th Avenue and Washington Street 

• East 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard 

Two mobile speed vehicles will also be placed at various high-risk locations in the city.   

After a 30-day warning period, the program will begin issuing citations for all violations. The fine for a red-light violation is $75. Drivers will incur fines of $40 in a non-school zone and $80 in a school zone for speed violations.    

All cameras will be operational by the end of 2025. Watch Thornton Police social media and website for updates on warning periods and live dates. 

The City of Thornton contracted with Verra Mobility, a leader in speed safety technology, to administer this safety program.   

The cameras will capture images of vehicle license plates and send them through secure video. Thornton PD staff will verify the infraction before a fine is issued to the vehicle’s owner. All driver information, including images, video, and metadata, is destroyed 181 days after a warning is issued and 1,095 days after a citation is issued or dismissed. Data is not stored for any period after that. Law enforcement only uses these photo enforcement cameras to enforce existing speed limit and red-light laws.   

“Speeding and red-light violations are two of the most common causes of serious crashes,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “If these cameras make drivers slow down or think twice, they’re doing what they’re meant to do.”

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 4 near the northbound I-25 off-ramp at East 84th Avenue. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 51-year-old male driving a Jeep was traveling eastbound on East 84th Avenue when a 20-year-old female driving a Toyota sedan exited I-25 and attempted to turn westbound onto East 84th Avenue, colliding with the Jeep. 

The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Investigators are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. The driver of the Jeep was uninjured and remained on scene.

55-year-old Robert McClain, wanted by Thornton Police Department on a warrant for the 2003 murder of 29-year-old Rosa Arguello, was taken into custody on the morning of Sept. 15 by Dubuque Police Department. Arrangements are underway for his extradition to Colorado.

"We are grateful for our partners at Dubuque PD and will continue to work closely with the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office to pursue justice for Rosa and her family," said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird.

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred at 2:02 PM in the area of 1201 West Thornton Parkway.

Preliminary investigation shows there was a shooting involving multiple people, and the suspects attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle. The suspects crashed into a residence in the area and all fled on foot. Officers arrived on scene and quickly set up a perimeter. After a thorough search, officers located and detained several people who were believed to be involved in the shooting. Multiple handguns were also recovered on scene. There were no injuries reported related to this shooting.

The Thornton Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on August 23 around 10:45 p.m. near the intersection of East 104th Avenue and Fox Run Parkway.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 37-year-old male was traveling westbound on East 104th Avenue when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. A witness reported that a black SUV cut in front of the motorcycle, contributing to the crash. Investigators are seeking additional information about the vehicle and its driver.

The rider was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, and investigators believe speed was also a contributing factor.
