Our primary responsibility is to serve and protect our community by responding to emergencies, preventing crime, and building trust with those we serve. While we may collaborate with federal agencies in situations that impact public safety, our focus remains on keeping our city safe for everyone.
The Thornton Emergency Communications Center is hiring Emergency Communications Specialists (Dispatchers) and an Emergency Communications Supervisor to support the critical work that happens behind the headset every day.
From answering 911 calls to guiding teams through high-stress moments, these roles are essential to keeping our community safe.
Whether you’re ready to be the steady voice on the line or the leader setting the standard, we’re looking for people who value teamwork, attention to detail, and service above all else.
Designed for community members ages 55 and older, this program offers a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement and helps participants better understand the daily responsibilities and challenges faced by police officers. The academy also provides valuable information on life and health planning, along with practical tips to help prevent property crimes and stay safe in the community.
Starting on April 8th, the academy meets once a week for six weeks from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Thornton Active Adult Center located at 11181 Colorado Boulevard.

Protect your vehicle: Always lock your car, hide valuables from plain sight, never leave it running unattended, consider using an anti-theft device, and park in well-lit areas as often as you can.

The Thornton Police Department is set to launch its new automated traffic safety program to change driver behavior, curb reckless speeding, and make Thornton streets safer for all. Red-light cameras will be installed in all directions at the following intersections:
- East 88th Avenue and Washington Street
- East 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard
Two mobile speed vehicles will also be placed at various high-risk locations in the city.
All cameras will be operational by the end of 2025. Watch Thornton Police social media and website for updates on warning periods and live dates.
The Blue Envelope Program is a community-focused initiative designed to promote calm and informed communication during traffic stops, emergency responses, and other interactions with first responders. Participants use a clearly marked blue envelope to store essential documents—such as a driver’s license and registration—alongside guidance for both the individual and first responders.
