Fox Squirrel, Aberts squirrel, and the Pine squirrel all call Colorado their home. The most commonly seen squirrel in Thornton is the Fox Squirrel.
In the spring and summer, Animal Control often receives calls for birds that are on the ground and seem not able to fly. More often than not these birds are fledglings.
The most common fox seen in Colorado is the Red Fox, however the Gray Fox has been spotted in our city as well.
The most common prairie dog in Thornton is
the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog. These are the little tan animals commonly seen in short grass fields throughout the city.
Coyotes are a natural predator in Colorado, and fill a need in keeping smaller animal populations in check. The best solution for coyotes is to learn to coexist with them.
Raccoons are a familiar sight to most people, with their bushy ringed tail and black face mask. They can get to be quite large, and have been seen in Thornton up to 30 pounds.
The two most common snakes seen in Thornton are the Garter snake and the Bullsnake. Both Garter snakes and Bullsnakes are smooth, with the head being the same diameter as the rest of its body.
The primary species of skunk seen in Thornton is the striped skunk. This is the familiar black skunk with the white stripe down its back.
