A Thornton patrol vehicle was struck by a commuter rail train around 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 21 near Colorado Boulevard and East 100th Avenue. The vehicle was unoccupied at the time; the officer had exited to assess where assistance was needed at a homicide scene. Colorado State Patrol is leading the crash investigation. The Thornton Police Department is conducting a separate administrative investigation to determine compliance with department policy.
